Through a series of compelling stories inspired by real experiences, Saplings explores the challenges, resilience and survival instincts of young people navigating the youth justice system, balancing humour with moments of profound emotion.

Written by Yuwaalaray playwright Hannah Belanszky, this award-winning production follows four young people, each searching for something important in their lives. Whether it's a sense of belonging, reconnecting with family, or simply enjoying a bowl of noodles, their journeys reveal the challenges faced when systems and circumstances stand in the way.

Originally developed through workshops with incarcerated young people, Saplings combines heartfelt storytelling with a soundtrack of rap and hip-hop music created by young people within the youth justice system. The result is a raw, honest and engaging theatre experience that invites audiences to reflect on resilience, accountability and the realities faced by vulnerable young Australians.

Following its acclaimed premiere at the Sydney Festival in 2024 and recognition as Best Production for Young People at the Sydney Theatre Awards, Saplings arrives in Melbourne for a limited season.
