Description
From the earliest projections and optical illusions to the birth of film and beyond, moving images have long sparked imagination, shared stories, and shaped history. Discover how inventors, artists, and innovators have used light, time, and motion to drive a technological revolution that continues to evolve today.
The Story of the Moving Image is a fascinating journey through time, culture and creativity. The exhibition features a diverse range of items, from ancient shadow puppets and Victorian-era magic lanterns to early cameras, iconic costumes, film sets, concept sketches, rare clips, and contemporary art.
Across five themed sections, the exhibition explores the origins and future of cinema and moving images, the art of production design, Australian screen stories, the rise of videogames, and the influence of screens in our daily lives.
What brings it all to life are the hands-on experiences. Visitors can animate shadows, build optical toys, experiment with time, edit film scenes, and create soundscapes in a custom Foley studio—bringing the magic of the moving image into their own hands.
