Description
The Art Gallery of Ballarat is at the heart of Ballarat’s creative community — a place where people can step beyond everyday life to be inspired and engaged by art. Since the nineteenth century, the Gallery has been a centre for social connection, inclusion, and learning. While the world has changed, the Gallery’s founding motto, "Not for self but for all," remains just as relevant today: the Gallery exists to serve its audiences.
Our purpose is to reflect the story of Ballarat — past, present, and future — and to champion meaningful audience experiences and greater accessibility to art. Through exhibitions and programs, we tell the stories of 'now' by looking back, looking forward, looking inward, and looking outward.
We welcome visitors from across Victoria, Australia, and the world. We foster a community of local practising artists, inviting their voices and visions to shape the Ballarat of today. We also work closely with art researchers and educators, offering insight and access to our living collection.
At every step, we lead with the needs of our audiences — the people of Ballarat and beyond.
Please note:
The main Gallery is currently closed for building upgrades. However, the Gallery Shop and Backspace are open.
Visit Backspace at 43 Mair Street to experience Next Gen 2025, an exhibition celebrating the creative work of VCE Art and Design students.
