Alex Warren brought plenty of emotion, energy and humour to Rod Laver Arena on the second night of his Finding Family on the Road tour in Melbourne. The concert went beyond the music, with Alex opening up about his life and sharing the stories behind some of his songs.

I already knew something about Alex’s story, but hearing him talk about it in his own words made it much more personal.
Alex has spoken openly about losing his dad to kidney cancer when he was just nine, growing up in a difficult home environment and becoming homeless at 18 after being kicked out of home. For a time, he slept in his car or stayed in friends’ cars. He also spoke about the people who helped him through those difficult years, including his wife, Kouvr Annon.
One of the most emotional moments came as Alex spoke about his dad, with photos from his younger years appearing on the large screen behind him. Seeing those images while listening to him talk about his childhood brought home just how much he had been through. It was hard not to feel emotional, and I found myself tearing up.

What I loved most about Alex was how easily he chatted with the audience. He regularly stopped to talk to people, ask questions and react to what was happening around him. It was one of the things that made the concert stand out, as he seemed genuinely interested in interacting with his fans.
There were some pretty funny moments, too. One fan had written a book for Alex, while a group of kids offered him a banana costume to wear on stage. He happily went along with it, which had everyone laughing.
The audience had made an effort with their outfits, too. There were plenty of people dressed as Loraxes, brightly coloured wigs and even Bunnings hats with lights on them. It added to the atmosphere and made the crowd just as entertaining to watch as the action on stage.

The set list included many of Alex’s well-known songs, alongside some newer material. Songs such as I Miss You More, Eternity and Save You a Seat were among the night’s more emotional moments.
Alex also made an effort to reach fans seated further back in the arena. He and his band moved to a smaller performance area in the middle of the venue, giving those further from the main stage a chance to see him up close. I thought this was a great touch and a nice way to include more of the audience in the show.

His breakout hit Ordinary was saved until the end. Before the song, his wife, Kouvr, chose a young girl from the crowd who had been dancing throughout the night to come up on stage and press the confetti button. The result was a huge burst of confetti across the arena. I’ve never seen so much of it! It was a fun way to finish the concert, with the crowd singing along and the energy in the arena reaching its peak.
The combination of personal storytelling and humour kept the night from feeling too heavy. Alex’s openness about his past also gave some of his songs a deeper meaning. Overall, it was an entertaining and moving night, with plenty of laughs, singalongs and moments that will stay with me.
