Beetlejuice The Musical – A wild, wicked ride

Melbourne’s Regent Theatre is now haunted by the Aussie premiere of Beetlejuice The Musical, and it’s an absolute scream. Eddie Perfect, who wrote the score, takes on the title role in this bold, chaotic hit full of gothic comedy, heart, and jaw-dropping spectacle.

THE STORY

When the strange and unusual teenager Lydia Deetz (Karis Oka) and her dad Charles (Tom Wren) move into a creepy old house, they meet the ghostly Maitlands (Elise McCann & Rob Johnson), a sweet but clueless couple who recently died. Things take a turn when the chaotic and flamboyant demon Beetlejuice (Eddie Perfect) appears, eager to wreak havoc and return to the land of the living… if someone says his name three times. As Lydia grapples with grief, identity, and her oddball new friendships, the story unfolds with a mix of dark humour, surreal antics, and unexpected heart.

WHY IT WORKS

Eddie Perfect is electric. Not only did he write the show’s music and lyrics, but his performance as Beetlejuice is packed with wild energy and razor-sharp timing.

Karis Oka shines as Lydia. She brings emotional depth and grit to the role, balancing dark humour with moments of vulnerability.

Visually, it’s next level. From Michael Curry’s larger-than-life puppetry to Kenneth Posner’s dramatic lighting and Peter Nigrini’s surreal projections, the stage transforms into a fully immersive Netherworld. The costumes are weird in the best way, and the special effects constantly surprise.

The ensemble. Elise McCann and Rob Johnson are awkwardly lovable as Barbara and Adam Maitland. Erin Clare is unforgettable as Delia, and Tom Wren nails the role of Charles Deetz with his clueless dad energy.

This isn’t your average ghost story—it’s bold, darkly funny, and unexpectedly moving.
