My Brilliant Career has returned to Southbank Theatre as part of Melbourne Theatre Company’s 2026 season, following its popular premiere in 2024. This musical adaptation of Miles Franklin’s classic Australian novel turns the coming-of-age story into a modern, easy-to-connect stage production that feels relevant for today’s young adults.

STORY
At its heart, the story follows Sybylla Melvyn, a strong-willed young woman growing up in rural New South Wales in the 1890s. Sybylla dreams of becoming a writer and building a life on her own terms, rather than following the traditional path expected of her: marriage and settling down.
As money struggles hit her family and societal pressure grows, Sybylla is forced to make tough choices about love, independence, and what kind of future she really wants.
Even though the story is set over 100 years ago, the themes feel very current. Many young people will relate to the pressure of expectations, figuring out who they are, and deciding whether to follow their passions or do what others think they should.

THE MUSIC & PERFORMANCES
The musical uses contemporary-style songs rather than old-fashioned theatre music, which makes it easier for younger audiences to connect with. The score blends emotional moments with lighter, funny scenes, keeping the story moving.
Kala Gare stars as Sybylla and brings a lot of energy and personality to the role. She captures Sybylla’s confidence, frustration, humour and determination, making her feel real and relatable.
Raj Labade plays Harry, Sybylla’s love interest, with a gentle and sincere performance. His songs are calm and emotional without feeling overdone.
The ensemble cast plays multiple roles, adding comedy, movement and lively energy throughout the show. Their quick character changes and dance scenes help keep the production fast-paced and engaging.

THE SET & VISUALS
The set design is simple but creative. It starts with a dry, open outback setting that reflects the tough rural life Sybylla grows up in. As the story develops, the stage transforms into more detailed scenes, including a glamorous ballroom that contrasts with her everyday struggles.
The changes in scenery help tell the story visually and keep the show interesting to watch.
