Review: Shoelace Chaser, Melbourne Theatre Company

Thea is always running, both literally and emotionally, as she manages the competing demands of school, training and caring for her mother. A talented athlete with clear potential, she begins to consider what life beyond her current responsibilities might look like, while remaining closely tied to home and the role she has taken on within her family.

Her running partner Syd brings humour and an easygoing energy that contrasts with Thea’s more guarded outlook. For much of the story, Syd is unaware of the pressure Thea is carrying, which adds both lightness and quiet tension to their friendship. Their connection offers moments of relief and normality, highlighting how important friendship can be during uncertain stages of life.

The performances support the production well. Leigh Lule presents a considered portrayal of Thea, balancing determination with moments of vulnerability. Zoe Boesen brings warmth to the role of Fiona, while Elliot Wood adds humour and ease as Syd. Together, the cast create believable relationships that allow the story and its themes to unfold naturally, giving a clear sense of the characters’ challenges and personal growth throughout the performance.
